Guatemala - Day One (1/28)

First view of first volcano!

Guatemala’s breathtaking beauty owes much to the 37 volcanoes standing like sentinels over the country’s fertile faros, colonial towns and azure lakes. While most of these volcanoes are dormant, the Pacaya, Fuego and Santiaguito Volcanoes are active, providing a glimpse of nature’s awesome, subterranean power.

Volcán de Agua (also known as Hunahpú (place of flowers) by Mayans) is a stratovolcano located in the department of Sacatepéquez in Guatemala. At 12,340 feet, Agua Volcano towers more than 11,500 feet above the Pacific coastal plain to the south and 6,600 feet above the Guatemalan Highlands to the north.

Closer to the city, closer to the ground.

Nais Restaurant at the Oakland Mall in Guatemala City has an amazing aquarium in the middle of the dining space with smaller aquariums hanging from the ceiling as one may often see televisions hanging in a sports bar.  MUCH NAISer.

Reminiscent of Austin Powers, for some reason.

The floor in the lobby!

I wish that Micah and Bryson had been with me so that I'd had a reason to ride the train through the mall!

"Praise to the Brave Champions of the Reformation . . ."

Rafa, when he was eight months old.  He didn't want to wear the clothes that they put him in.
This is one of the many dangers of taking one's significant other to the in-laws!

Rafa's father parents on their wedding day.  Rafa looks EXACTLY like his grandfather and father.

Rafa and his dog, Pituca (Pitu).

Portales Shopping Center

Green gelatin covered cake.  Tastes exactly as one would expect.

DELICIOUS Guatemalan espresso.

Red gelatin covered cake.  Tastes exactly as one would expect.

Strange dog statue at the mall.  No water in his bowl.

Their license late reminds me so much of Maine's.

  1. You could've ridden the train! Does Circe know about Pitu? I think I would like the espresso but not the gelatin cake.
