Portage Glacier and Ice

The QUINTESSENTIAL Alaska tour.  Note the clear, mirror-smooth water, snow covered mountains and the BLUE ICE!!  This occurs when snow falls on a glacier, is compressed, and becomes part of the glacier as it winds its way toward a body of water.  During its travels, air bubbles that are trapped in the ice are squeezed out, and the size of the ice crystals increases, making it clear.  Blue ice is much more dense and clear ice has begun to melt.
